However, be aware that terms like "Amish-Raised" or "Amish Chickens" do not guarantee nonconfined or humane animal treatment, nor that products are antibiotic-free. The only way to be assured that the meat or poultry you are purchasing is humanely raised and free of antibiotics is to visit and contract directly with individual farms. Allen's sells bulk sides and retail cuts of locally-raised beef and pork, as well as chickens. The operation also custom processes beef, pork, and lamb for its clients. Store hours are Monday through Friday 7 am to 4 pm, and Saturday 7 am to 12 pm.

Located 2 3/4 miles south of Arthur on the County Line Road (000E in Douglas County/1800E in Moultrie County), CIPPP offers farm-raised, processed poultry. The plant's retail store is open Monday through Friday 8 am to 4 pm, and Saturday 7:30 am to 11:30 am. Cash and checks only. Alternatively, you may also purchase CIPPP-processed poultry at Strawberry Fields in Urbana.

Chuck's is a rarity, typically hanging its beef 8 to 10 days prior to processing. Both the beef and pork are available for retail and home sale. If you've purchased an animal locally, Chuck's does a big share of the custom processing of cattle and hogs for Central Illinois. To get to Chuck's take Route 45 through Tolono. At the Ivesdale sign, turn right; travel through Sadorus to Ivesdale. Turn left at the gas station. Chuck's is the first building in the second block on the left side.

Das Schlacht Haus will not only custom cut your order, but they will do it while you wait. Das Schlacht Haus sells beef and pork in addition to chicken and turkey from nearby Central Illinois Poultry Processing Plant. You'll also find, on occasion, jams and produce from other local farms and firms. From Arthur, take the County Line Road (000E in Douglas County/1800E in Moultrie County) south 2 miles, turn right. Das Schlacht Haus is the blue building on your right. Hours are 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday, and 8 am to 3 pm Saturday. Arrive early if you are placing a large order. Cash and checks only.

Located between Arcola and Arthur on Route 133, Dutch Valley offers a variety of sausages, fresh pork and beef, as well as smoked bacon, ham, and pork chops. Dutch Valley often carries jerky, pickles, and noodles from several Midwest Amish sects. Custom processing also is available.
